The Sud-Est department of the country, and particularly the arrondissement of Belle-Anse (communes of Anse-à-Pitre, Belle-Anse, Grand-Gosier and Thiotte), was severely affected by drought from 2014 to 2015. This natural disaster reduced the agricultural production of family farms by more than half. In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew also hit the same department at a time when its agricultural production was still in deficit, and a high number of households were acutely food insecure.
